Genotype; The Unspoken God.

HOW WAS YOUR DAY?

You have often heard of friends/relatives who are allergic to dust, chemicals and foods; this is traceable to their genotype. Posterity, I have the difficulty in patronizing from food vendors due to my genotype; I am allergic to certain species hence I always go through the hell of identifying a possible low threat food to my health. This has helped to reduce the cost burden on health especially due to food.

Cerelac babies will not understand how we (90's borns) carried out our love affair. Before I share my first love letter, let's talk about genotype.

Google explains genotype as the genetic constitution of an individual organism. Genotype reveals what your body is made of and how it functions. Phenotype  refers to the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.

Do you remember that woman who isn't able to produce breast milk for her baby to suck?🤔🤔
Yeah, this is as a result of her genotype. I'm not making hasty generalization. Knowing your genotype helps you to fully understand your body.

Below are the importance of knowing your genotype, however, there are more;

1. It prevents "unnecessarily" financial expenses on health. For example, because you're ignorant about being allergic to groundnut, you are always hospitalized when you eat it.

2. One is able to make informed decisions on their life partners. Love does not erase genotype.

Visit any hospital and know your genotype. It will cost an average of GHS 50.

LOVE DOES NOT CHANGE GENOTYPE.

Now, posterity read my love letter which is reflected in Frederick Bruce. He is such a talented writer, get copies of his book.

LETTERS FROM THE HEART

C/O Dede Asante,
P.O.Box SR 100,
Stadium Road,
Accra-Ghana.

My Prospective Beloved,
P.O.Box OGN 2018,
Only God Knows,
The World.

Dear Madam or Young Lady,

APPLICATION TO BE YOUR BELOVED

I am very honoured writing you this letter in search for a prospective beloved for myself. My name is Frederick Nii Ofei Bruce, a teenager less than 18 years with the permission of my relationship aunty, Dede Asante, to become 18 years old or more, all of a sudden just to journey on this search for a beloved.

Call it "football age" or perhaps a shady move, but that is how lovely my aunty can be, so I can just find love. So to whatever age you are, above 18 years, just add two years more to it, and I am just that age.

For as the adage goes, "Age is just a number. Maturity is the real deal". Only Aunty Dede says that though. For the deal of maturity, trust my Aunty to coach me well, so that too is well covered like ice snow covering the Himalayan mountains.

I have all the characters of a good beloved, except for the fact that I am very deficit in weight only. The need for a beloved is in line with our data collection for the marketing of a book soon to be released titled, #TalesFromThePot, of which she said I lack the experience to market, since I am not in love.

In retaliation, I wrote a book titled, #TheBoyInLove, published by #HeturaBooks , but she was not impressed. She just wanted me to get a beloved!

She daily rants that I should talk about the book, as though it was my first love, which unfortunately I don't have. Hopefully, you would end such a mysterious misery in my life by accepting me, with all gladness. I want to escape the "Nsawam prisons of love", before Songo puts more fire in my bosom.

I will be glad if you would consider my request, and be granted an interview for future analysis.
Well, I am not that "broke", but I think we can always manage some nice Sobolo by Fianu Norte Clara, popularly known as #NorteSobolo, and lemonade drinks done by my Aunty for our first date.

I'm really allergic to most junk foods like pizza, and the likes, because I honestly can't afford them. My allergy rises anytime I have to buy them, so let us settle for some fried, spicy plantain or "kelewele", as it is popularly known in Ghana.

Oh I almost forgot. I also deal in some tastiest mashed Kenkey "smoothies", called #MASHKAY. You will love it. At least I can dash you some like "Free bonto" since you are not yet in my pocket.

I hate selfies too, because I prefer that my magical life moments are taken by Clement Eastwood, after make-up is done by Emerald Debi. Let me stop here before I blow my whole cover, and render Anas Aremeyaw Anas jobless. He surely must have some skeletons to dig up in my life to tell you later. I don't mind, for I know love conquers all.

I guess there is no need for an attached CV, but if you still are not satisfied, kindly visit #EnzymeClassics to check out things for yourself. I will be waiting for that first date. Kindly reach me on 0501-366281 to pick up some copies of my books, as our love agreement. My autograph will be the sealing signature!

Lots of love!

Yours faithfully,
SIGNED
Frederick Nii Ofei Bruce.

A Sexual War Against Boy #HearMeToo

A Male Raped or Defiled By Female

Slowly, her hands dribbled and cleanly removed the cloths of the six-year-old boy. Standing innocently his soothsaying prowess couldn't predict the event which will follow. Smooching and cuddling continued as he wondered what he had done to be punished unduly for a female's sexual desires.

Since childhood, have you ever seen or read news of a boy raped by a woman? I'm still flipping through Daily Graphic's newspaper to find a story on a boy raped by a female. Kindly share with me if you find one.

What would you have done if a boy reports an issue of sexual abuse?

As I inquired and combed for a man who has ever been raped, each person gives a funny answer. Some claimed that it is a privilege to be sexually abused as a boy at a younger age. This notion has been amplified by Rene Guyon's society which advocated for sexual relationships between adults and children. It had its slogan as, "sex before eight or too late". Labeling culprits as pedophiles might be judgmental however the focus of this piece is on the reality of sexually abused men and boys.

In a sexually reproductive health (SRH) program, an instructor compared sexual intercourse to a one-kilometer race at a constant speed. If that is how it is, then why should raped boys be silenced? Perhaps, due to a stereotype, where male raped victims are claimed to have played an active role, the male becomes ashamed of revealing such abuse. This violates their right to human dignity hence the need to address it.

Let me put on the cloak of a prophet and make some claims, a raped boy might hate and sexually exploit women. This is in relation to the history of Bodil Joensen, Denmark pornographer who acted in "Animal Farm" and "A Summer Day", who had been brutally raped at the age of 12 but her fanatically religious mother blamed her for the rape. Bodil fulfilled her vowed that is to have sexual intercourse with bulls in her adulthood.

Boys suffer sexual violence at various levels however with the perception of penetration by men or boys, they are perceived to have enjoyed the act. Society is failing to capture the sexual abuse of boys and men. The psychological effects of rape on boys and men cannot be underestimated.

I'm not raising a false alarm on raped men and boys but amplifying their voices and educating you.

Since the boy has an erected manhood during sexual abuse, does that mean he enjoyed it?

Humans respond to stimuli hence there is no need to claim that boys/men are content with sexual abuse.

Nobody seems to care about the boy who is raped by a woman or girl. Men have dignity just as women hence we must ditch the misguided thoughts of raped boys/men.

Male 'Raped or Defiled' by Male
Ironically, society will react quickly to a news story or situation which highlights sexual violence committed by a man against a boy. This will be seen as a cankerworm hence an immediate demand for the arrest and the medical care for the victim.

This should be the same reaction towards males raped by women

Now, let us be objective with the issue of rape (men and boys), and channel our effort towards providing solutions to help relieve the burden of guilt and shame among men and boys. Below are some ways that this issue can be solved.

a. Exploring new ways of reporting issues, hence U-Report can be an effective tool.

U Report is an initiative by the UN to serve as a tool for gathering information to influence policy and developmental projects. It is a free SMS/messenger tool.

b. Public sensitization on sexual violence against boys and men.

Posterity, let me continue with my final exam but ponder on these things. Grandma made a great sale of her dawadawa at the market, such an exciting week to begin.

Menstruation Period; A Man's Perspective

With a worried look, I ask, "is it menstrual cramps so I send you home? Or it is endometriosis?"

This has been the question I pose to friends (ladies) who look dull and show signs of pain in the first week or last week of every month. Being conscious of endometriosis, I persist, "Go to the hospital if the pain continues".

Some men think that menstruation is limited to the changing of sanitary pads, just like changing the diapers of a baby, then, everything returns to normal. In relation to menstrual cramps, men often mention "blue balls" to explain the excruciating pain that women experience. It looks quite simple, as men think of menstrual cramps as a day's pain. Hey man ! it isn't easy as that.

On several occasions, I've witnessed women wail and later became unconscious due to menstrual cramps, during hours of active work or school. Gosh ! it just reproduces the scene of a woman in labor.

When a woman shows signs of inability due to menstruation, pain killers are the best option that an average man will recommend. Men never think of pain killers when "blue balls" happen? That might be the dumbest idea they've ever had.

Actually, during menstrual cramps, some women chew pain killer tablets like biscuits or groundnuts. I always get frozen whenever I'm reminded that menstruation is a monthly thing that will last for decades.

Now, as a man, I keep wondering whether they've visited the hospital for further health assistance.

In issues of the sexual reproductive system, menstruation is an unattractive topic that most men "despise". Most sexual reproductive health problems are confined in the heart of women. One may experience pain for two decades and might consider it as a natural phenomenon.

Hey, woman! You got to explain to your doctor or male partner. Every pain has a source.

Many a time, some men don't understand why women fail to work effectively and efficiently. Laziness mustn't be the dominant reason for their ineffectiveness. Sometimes you need to be conscious of their biological makeup.

Blood, eish! Such a disgrace. This is a common response from some men at the sight of a soiled dress of a woman (stained with blood due to her menstruation). Well, some men are hypersensitive to blood but they got to know how to help women during these times.

Ms. Nikitta Dede Adjirakor, the Executive Producer of "Thousand Needles", explains how women do not speak about their sexual reproductive health in an era of open media. You got to watch this movie, it will give you life to speak up.

Women, you need not hide it, speak up, your health is what you have in this world. Just tread cautiously in discussing these issues.

With some knowledge of the female reproductive system, I've grown to effectively work with women at various levels. Just keep nodding your head and gaze steadily at me.

Some have attributed the negligent attitude of men to cultural values; some cultures regard menstruation as a bad omen. Women! we got work to do.

Educate the little boy and male friends about female sexual reproductive health.

Ghana's Unclear Support of Climate Change

There's always been some form of perceptions about climate change. Some scholars from the first world nations are of the opinion that climate change is more of a volcano waiting to explode if not controlled. Well, contrary to this assertion, third world nations still argue of its relevance in today's society.

In 1957, Ghana gained control over her internal political affairs as to whether the  economy, environment, technology among others are in good shape, that stays unanswered. These sectors which are vital to the nation’s well-being were left in constant debates which have never seen a relevant argument left not responded to. Despite the hopeless debates on general independence, the environmental sector is almost, perhaps completely ignored, hence endangering species including the human race. For two years, between 2016 and 2018, government’s expenditure on the environment has been a desert scenario where evergreen climate seedlings are being sowed.

In 2016, after the Paris Agreement, which at all stages arose the consciousness of people across the globe about climatic disorders and the series of threats every citizen of the world would be exposed to, Ghana, in effect announced the establishment of a $1.5 billion coal powered plant in 2016. -

With anticipations, the citizenry received an assurance of a 10% progress in the steering of the renewable energy mix as at 2020 and completion by 2021. In return, taxpayers were again re-informed to look to 2030 for the exact same 10% progress to be accomplished. What accounted for the sudden change?

In 2016 – proposals were approved for the construction of a coal-powered plant at Aboano in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region which would massively influence global warming, affect people in various negative ways than it already has according to sources who have observed the effects of the technology. Hence a contradiction to the climate change target globally.

In 2016, the government stated that the Ministry of Finance “in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) with other concerned players in the industry will access global climate funds specifically the Green Climate fund.”(2016 budget, 284, page 65)

Per authentic sources, the statistics below indicates the carbon emissions of coal and fuel combustion.

In 2017, the talk went dead and the machinery were almost  abandoned as concentration was shifted to earth regulation. The outcome however, was massive. Yet the impact seemed quite microscopic. Mining was the new line of attention seeking disaster where up to 400 small scale mines were banned from their activities, leading to the deployment of 400 security forces. How much improvement did the environment undergo after all these?
In 2018, the trend changed again in an opposite direction, now to mining bauxite in the Atewa Forest in a $10 billion bauxite deal with China.

The Annual Progress Report which covers the activities undertaken within a metropolitan or municipality are not always readily available. Some districts only have their reports dating as far as 2012 (Bongo District).

Data source:http://sdwebx.worldbank.org/climateportal/DownloadData/tas_1901_2015.xls

The scatter plot above indicates our temperature after the year 2000. The temperature level, though, it drops, the average recorded according to our data source is above 25°C meaning, our ozone layer is gradually being reaped off.

The rainfall disorder and temperature irregularities are signs enough.
Interest in money cannot compete for the preservation of life. When the environment and its make up dies, so do the inhabitants.

Part Two of the state of Environment affairs continues in the next edition.

Untold Stories of Social Media Users

Posterity, in 2010 I joined Facebook. That was my first social media account. Undoubtedly, some people on these platforms have gained prominence. Let's tag them as Social Media Influencers, Social Media Enthusiasts, etc.

Their online activities have an impact on their followers even though I haven't conducted a research on this.

Everybody has a friend who gets one "LIKE" for a post made on Facebook. Yeah, it is quiet frustrating to get "likes" or "loves" on the social media.

Social media is a "pressure gadget" because it persuades people to develop new behavior patterns in the real world. Unconsciously, people have developed certain behaviors as result of their exposure to social media.

Cultivation Theory of communication explains the long effect of television; shaped viewers' understanding of the real social world.

Everyone has a friend who has surprisingly become a motivational speaker or relationship counselor on social media.

What impact have you made since you joined social media? Make we chop social media enthusiasts matter small, if not wey tin we gain.

These individuals have a lot of engagement on social media platforms; thus they have large followers who like, share and comment on their posts.

Constitution Day ! Prof. Mike Ocquaye Don Say Something

Today marks the constitutional day in Ghana, therefore 7th January has become a republic holiday. I was trying to figure out what this holiday means to the ordinary Ghanaian. Well, let me share one part of the discussion here.

Headline: What is Republic Day In Ghana?

●What Prof. Mike Oquaye said in January 2018.

In 1960 Ghana became a Republic. However, in 1966 that was overthrown by a military coup led by Kotoka and the 1st Republic ended. The 2nd Republic came into being in 1969. That Republic also came to an end in another coup led by General Acheampong.

In 1979 we had the 3rd Republic led by President Limann. Rawlings staged the 31st December Revolution/Coup in 1981 and ended the Third Republic. On 7th January 1993, the 4th Republic was brought into being and Chairman Rawlings became a constitutional President. No single constitution was ever restored.

Each Republic had its own constitution. It was new, fresh and different. When we celebrate 1st July as Republic Day and any foreigner asks: “which Republic are you celebrating?”, what do we tell that person? Every reference in official circles speaks of the 4th Republic including Parliament etc and that is what we must be celebrating. That is the Constitution which gives birth to a new hope for all Ghanaians.

A little history

A little history will be useful. On March 6, 1957 Ghana emerged the first African nation south of the Sahara to become independent from colonial rule. Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, whose CPP had won a convincing victory in the 1956 General Elections, became the first Prime Minister and Dr K.A. Busia emerged  Leader of the Opposition.

The Governor was the representative of the Queen as Head of State with essentially ceremonial functions while Dr Kwame Nkrumah was Head of Government, vested with the Executive power of the State. Ghana was a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and was exerting itself in the global family of nations.

When Ghana became a Republic in 1960, it essentially was to remove the last remnant of colonisation. Our independence had been won already but like India, there was a clamour for a Ghanaian Head of State as well as Head of Government. This aspiration began in India which became independent earlier in 1947. But in the Ghana scenario, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah decided to combine the two positions of Head of State and Head of Government. This is how Dr Nkrumah became President after the 1960 Elections under the 1960 Constitution.

Notably, nobody spoke of the First Republic throughout the era of Dr Nkrumah. It was simply the Republic of Ghana. That is what applies in the USA. That Republic which came into existence in 1789, has never fallen nor changed. That, unfortunately, does not apply to Ghana.

In Ghana, we have had the First Republic, Second Republic, Third Republic and Fourth Republic. Each one had its own Constitution which was different.  There is no single continuum in any of the Constitutions. Each was an era of its own. When constitutional rule was restored after each military intervention a new constitution was established.

Different Republics

In fact the First Republic was totally different from the other Republics in terms of historicity and ideology. The 1960 Constitution was never restored. Indeed, it was repudiated in 1969. The former did not provide fundamental human rights, while the latter was a charter of liberty.

The events of February 24, 1966 gave Ghana a second chance to demonstrate the true spirit of our National motto Freedom and Justice – freedom from ignorance, freedom from regimentation, freedom to do and dare what we know is true and fair, and above all, freedom to recommit ourselves to liberal democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

Let those who are saying that the Fourth Republic derives from the First Republic show any reference to the First Republic in any manner whatsoever.

Our Constitution of 1992 which commenced on January 7, 1993 does not show any nexus whatsoever with the 1960 constitution. Indeed the two are at total variance.  They can never meet.

We examine certain things which were the order of the day under the First Republican Constitution of 1960.

I. A Ghanaian could be detained for five years, renewable for further five years at the fiat of the President. Today this is unimaginable. When a Ghanaian insists that a relative cannot be detained beyond 48 hours, where did it come from? It was provided in the 1992 Constitution which commenced January 7, 1993.

II. Under the 1960 Constitution, by Article 55, the President had constitutional power, whereby at his pleasure, he could dissolve Parliament and rule by Executive Order. Can it happen today? This new order does not allow this! When we recount that the legislative power of State is vested in only Parliament, we should also remember that the 1960 Constitution allowed Nkrumah to suspend Parliament and rule by Presidential fiat whenever he (Nkrumah) alone felt it was in the national interest (Article 55). This cannot happen under the 1992 Constitution.

III. Today, Parliament cannot legislate to bring one-party state, introduce PDA or withdraw our liberties. All the human rights provisions of the 1992 Constitution are in sharp contradiction with the First Republic.

IV. There was no Vice-President under 1960 Constitution. Today we have it. All power does not belong to one person.

V. Today, can a President sack judges, reverse a decision of the Supreme Court and compose his own panel to re-try the same case? Well that was the law that ruled and enslaved Ghanaians. By a 1964 Constitutional Amendment this could happen under the First Republic. It is no more.

VI. When Ghanaians read with sweet assurance that they have a legal right to demonstrate, we should not be oblivious that this is the result of our constitution of 1992 which commenced on January 7, 1993.

VII. The words of our anthem today, are different from the anthem during the 1st Republic. There was nothing in the old anthem requiring Ghanaian to “resist oppressors rule” and no charge to the people to be “bold to defend forever the cause of freedom and of right…”. The conceptualisation has totally changed and we cannot persist in the old order which is fundamentally different.

VIII. January 7 is our day of destiny. From January 7, 1993, Ghanaians can only be ruled by law - The Rule of Law; Separation of Powers; Freedom of Speech and other liberties; no detention without trial, freedom of the Judiciary; nobody (no President) can change a verdict of the Courts of Ghana.

IX. Chieftaincy is sacrosanct under the Fourth Republican Constitution and no President can depose a chief etc. The First Republican Constitution destool and banish chiefs. Can it happen today?

On every January 7, we should celebrate the cause of freedom and of right. In the years that a President is not being sworn-in, we should still dedicate the day to the most priceless of all God’s gifts to humanity – freedom and justice. We should say: “Never Again” to all acts of man’s inhumanity to man, military/civilian brutality and every act of oppression”. This is to ensure that our liberties once trampled upon will never be abused again. Never Again! January 7 is the day of Constitutionalism.

If we simply celebrate Republic Day without knowing what we are celebrating, we will be groping in darkness. If we take July 1 as “Ghana’s Republic Day”, what Republic Day are we talking about? Are we celebrating that which was destroyed, abandoned, repudiated on February 24 1966 or January 7, 1993, the day on which the 1992 Constitution was brought to being? How do you celebrate that which is otiose, dead and gone and replaced with another?

Handover

Ghana should not appear to be confused at all. I remember when President Kufuor was going to be sworn into office on January 7, 2001. Ghanaians who had been used to ‘handing over’ after military rule were preparing for handover from Rawlings to Kufuor.

Some of us stood vehemently against this and prevailed. The truth is that under the 4th Republican Constitution there is nothing like a handover. The Chief Justice administers an Oath, the in-coming President is sworn into office and the President becomes President. An Ex-President attends the ceremony simply as another special dignitary.

Ghana has been through three Republics and is experiencing the 4th Republic (which we all believe, hope and pray will be the last). July 1, 1960 is no more our Republic Day. Historically it is only one of the Republic Days of the past.

Today, so long as the 4th Republic continues a President will forever be sworn-in on January 7. The date, January 7 therefore is a memorable day. It reminds us that we have a President, freely elected by us, who will rule Ghana by the tenets of our Constitution which came into effect January 7, 1993.

It is noteworthy that Senior Citizens will continue to have their special place in a new arrangement.

Correction

The December 31 case corrected various contradictions. By virtue of the democratic and libertarian framework and provisions of the 1992 Constitution you could not celebrate December 31 which was out of line with the 1992 constitution.

From now onwards let it be clear to all and sundry that nobody, no matter who, can celebrate or perform any act whatsoever, outside the philosophy and underpinnings of the one and only constitutional and republican dispensation.

If the First Republic Order of 1960 were still of effect today, if any Ghanaian is detained for weeks or months by the Executive, let no man or woman go to Court!
